□ 달콤한 인생 (A Bittersweet Life, 2005)
그는 계속해서 묻는다. 왜 나를 이렇게 만들었죠? 하지만 맞은편의 대답은 거울에 튕겨진 형상처럼 뒤집혀 돌아온다. 넌 왜 그랬지? 그는 이 질문을 이해하지 못한다. 바람도 나무도 아닌 자신의 마음이 흔들렸기 때문임을. 그는 모두를 향해 복수의 총알을 퍼부어 대지만, 결국 창에 비친 자신의 모습을 향해 헛된 펀치를 날리고 있을 뿐이었다.
그에게는 여러 번의 기회가 온다. 잘못했다고 말할 수 있는 기회. 돌이킬 수 있었던 기회. 하지만 그는 거부한다. 오만의 경지까지 이른 자기확신과 타협하지 않겠다는 충실함의 샴쌍둥이가 이 모든 비극의 시작. 그저 안도감으로 쪽팔림조차 접고 눈물만 철철 흘리던 앞에서 급작스럽게 보스가 등을 돌릴 때, 그가 던져진 곳은 존재의 뿌리를 생매장 시키는 혼돈의 구덩이이었다.
손오공의 관처럼 옥죄는 화두를 품고, 그는 면벽수도 대신 총을 택한다. 그리고 수수께끼를 푸는 대신 끝을 보기로 하고, 이유조차 알지 못한 채 생매장 당했던 것 처럼, 다시금 그저 허우적대며 끝을 보자고 쏘아댄다. 냉랭한 표정으로 덫에 걸린 짐승의 본능적인 공황을 감추며.
그는 인간이 취할 수 있는 가장 소모적인 방식으로 네 벽의 불가해와 맞선다. 존재를 지켜왔던 충실함은 파멸을 향해서도 똑같이 발휘되어, 그처럼 충실하게 영문모를 복수의 끝으로 치닫게 한다. 그리고 마지막에선 정말 '영화처럼' 모두를 남김없이 넘어뜨리지만, 승리도 해답도 취하지 못한 채 이 비극의 줄기와는 별 관계가 없는 또라이 킬러 하나에게 허무하게 처치된다.
하지만 이 비극성은 진동하는 피비린내에 묻혀 제 향을 뿜어내지 못하는 느낌이다. 뭐랄까..영화의 두 축을 복수와 화두로 보았는데, 시소의 한 축에 있던 화두 쪽에 제 무게가 실리지 못해, 갸우뚱하고 기운 것 같다. 다가오지 않는 멜로에 닭살스러움을 느끼듯 오버된 잔혹함과 떼죽음이 불편했다. 그렇게 죽이면서도 '가치'를 따져 물었던 파고의 코헨쓰를 떠올렸다.
요새 영화들 보면 누가누가 더 잔혹한가, 누가누가 더 또라이인가 시합이라도 벌이는 것 같다. 하지만 킬 빌도 봤고, 올드 보이도 봤는데 이런 피잔치는 아무리 더 간다해도 데자뷔다. 그의 혼란과 화두에 조금 더 무게가 실렸으면 어땠을까. 중심점을 옮겨 아슬아슬 균형을 맞게하는 깃털 하나만큼의 미묘함으로.
올드보이를 보고나서 사람들이 그러더라. 말조심하자. 달콤한 인생을 보고 나선 이렇게 말해야 할 것 같다. 여자야, 함부로 웃지 마라. 그 웃음이 메마른 남자의 가슴에 꽂힐 때, 그 뒤의 피비린내는 네가 감당할 수 없는 것이 아니란다.
한순간의 달콤함의 댓가로 너무 비싼 값을 치루어야 했던 남자. 그래도 그 순간엔 웃었다. 인생엔 그런 순간도 있긴하다만...It's just bittersweet. 어리석음의 댓가에 대한 섬뜩한 우화.
